Progress, Not Perfection

On Wednesday, 7 October 2026, eight Sprechbaristas gathered in Cologne for a Toastmasters evening centred on “Progress, Not Perfection.” The theme encouraged them to experiment, step outside their comfort zones and recognise small successes rather than wait for a flawless performance.

Kristof delivered a prepared speech about special projects in Pathways, highlighting opportunities for personal growth within the Toastmasters learning programme. His contribution earned him the award for Best Prepared Speech.

The topic fitted the evening’s motto: developing public speaking skills means trying something new and building on experience, one step at a time.

Christian B. led the Table Topics session, challenging participants to respond spontaneously. These short, unprepared speeches offered room for creativity, quick thinking and a little courage.

Birgit and Kristof shared the award for Best Table Topics Speakers. Birgit and Sarah received recognition for their use of the Word of the Evening, while Melanie won Best Evaluation. The Hammer went to Sarah B., who guided the programme as Toastmaster of the Evening.

A special thank-you went to Sarah M., who could not attend in person but contributed an eloquent audio message. It was played during the meeting and warmly appreciated by those present.

The message added another way to take part in the club evening: contributing to the conversation and encouraging others, even without being in the room.

Prepared speeches, spontaneous responses and constructive evaluations gave participants different ways to practise communication and develop confidence. Throughout the evening, the focus remained on progress rather than perfection.
